Most falls: two years

Most premises injury lawsuits must be filed within two years from the fall (IC 34-11-2-4).

Claims against a government entity: much shorter

A fall on a city sidewalk, in a public building or at a public school may lead to a claim against a government entity. Those claims follow special rules. Written notice is generally due within 180 days for a local government unit (city, county, town, school corporation) and 270 days for the State (IC 34-13-3-8 and IC 34-13-3-6). Call quickly.

Claims against government entities are generally not governed by the Comparative Fault Act, and Indiana's stricter contributory-negligence rule can apply.

Deadlines can be shorter in some situations. This is general information, not legal advice.
